Gregor Blanco, I salute you! This is how you save a No-No. The Perfect Game is perhaps the most sacred moment in sports. When you are perfect through 5, reality starts to slip and fade. Word leaks out on bottom line score feeds, FB, and Twitter. People watch West Coast Baseball for no reason. Above all NO ONE TALKS TO THE PITCHER. But everyone knows what is going on and as a fielder you do whatever it takes to keep the dream alive. If a Perfect Game is not on the line Gregor Blanco does not make it within 10 feet of this ball, yet with history on the line he makes a catch that would have pushed Willie Mays. I have watched this 10 times and still don’t actually think it’s possible. But that’s what perfect games do. Matt Cain was so money all night- 14k’s!- and straight dealing to the Astros that the Baseball Gods knew he deserved it and thus they gave Blanco some giddy-up and go when his pitcher needed it.

Play ball! (by zach.stone)
World Series starts tonight. As I am a self loathing Cubs fan, go Rangers. Anyhow, this is from a glorious spring evening when we played ball in the Merton garden. In suits. Doubt baseball gets played much there. Good thing the fellows didn’t see us. It’s probably a ‘ball game’ and as such, banned.

(via Rafe Bartholomew Interviews Don DeLillo About Underworld and Bobby Thomson’s Shot Heard ‘Round the World - Grantland)
Nice interview with DeLillo, one of the great American Novelists. ‘Underworld’ and David Foster Wallace’s ‘Infinite Jest’ are likely the two best ‘sports’ novels I have ever read. Both of them use sports (baseball and tennis) to explore the notion of an American Dream gone awry. Both also have a bizarre obsession with garbage.
