My trifecta of North Oxford gems. The city center Big 5 steal most of Oxford’s Publight: Turf, KA, White Horse, Lamb and Flag, and Bird and Baby. All are, to a certain extent, obligatory and hold a somewhat affectionate place in my heart. Mostly, though, they are a pain to frequent as they are perma-rammed with people. They can be fun for a loud night but when I just want to have a pint and bite with friends they are borderline traumatic. I mean last summer Pete and I were trying to flesh out our Alps plan at Turf and had to shout across the table.

Thus I give you my North Oxford favs. Good beer, good food, and generally more pleasing atmosphere. The Royal Oak is a big place on Banbury but full of nooks and crannies to have a quiet word in, and generally has something interesting on tap. The Rose and Crown is the queen of North Parade, one of Oxford’s prettiest streets and one of the last genuine Free Houses in Oxford. For me, though, the GA is home.

Tucked in on Plantation Road (there is also a GA on N. Parade) it is to me the perfect pub. Great food (100% Veggie/Vegan but by god their chilli must have the flesh of dead animals in it it is so so so so hearty), quality beers and fun landlords. It manages to have a good vibe by not trying to beat you over the head with it’s Britishness or quaintness like most pubs in Oxford. Moreover, it is rarely frequented by marauding bands of undergrads or tourists. It feels as if it is a ‘real’ pub tucked into a town of Pub-like places. When I lived in Jericho I would pop round for a pint and to write. Something unthinkable in Turf.

I guess the GA’s status as the OUMC pub helped build my affection. 1-?? pints/week since sometime in 2007- with ocean induced hiatuses of various length tossed in- builds some loyalty. But still, even new comers love it. And a venerable old Jericho pub connoisseur- who can remember jamming with river tramps in front room pubs- claims it is the last ‘real pub’ in Jericho. Anyhow, all 3 are good, and a damn bit better than the madhouses in City Center.

Really, Baltimore is quite cool. From Fells Point to Mount Vernon, Ellie and Charlie have really opened my eyes. Today Charlie, Eva, and I had dinner in one of the coolest bars I’ve been to in a while: The Brewer’s Art. We ate in the basement bar and enjoyed its perfectly dark atmosphere, amazing food (rosemary fries!!) and great pints- well at least I did. Anyhow, off to DC for the day tomorrow but Baltimore has been brilliant.

Last night I went to the Magdalen Arms for the first time, and it was very good. While I doubt I will find myself in the happy position of having a full dinner there frequently, it is well worth the time and money. We had antipasta misto to start and wood pigeon and cod as our mains. I am not a true foodie so I can’t really offer nuanced comment and critique other than that it was very good. Much better than Gee’s. Moreover the atmosphere is a pleasant change from the normal Oxford scene. Never once did I feel hurried to get through a course or clear the table so the staff could seat other guests. And, to top it off, the manager (I think) made me a killer old fashioned even though they arn’t on the menue.

Me and Mom at Leeds Castle

So. As people occasionally ask me for various travel ideas, I thought I would share some memorable places/itineraries. I will try to annotate these posts as fully as possible, but I cannot, however, be asked to list hotels, pubs, etc. unless they were particularly memorable.

Length: 2 Days

I would just like to note that last night I enjoyed one of the finest meals in recent memory with two old friends at The Guinea in Mayfair. My my my, they know how to cook the meat. An Eric Hassler (if you know him, you know what I mean) level perfect steak, great atmosphere, great service, and a good wine pairing. Really no complaints at all. And, above all, the conversation was good, true, and useful.

The good times roll again in Oxford next week. Watch out kidz. Medieval Lit grad students on the loose. Things are about to get real. In a Chaucerian sense. From a great night at The Bear back in the good old, pre-breaking of the Lexington Fellowship/we all still lived in Oxford and had money/time to kick back and relax. Those were good days.

In a break from climbing pix, I have decided to break down and share some Oxford places I love. Will not share my real secrets, just places I find nice. Recently the Turl Street Kitchen has caught my fancy. Long I lamented Oxford’s lack of a non-pub/non-club/non-restaurant open past, say, 7pm. I mean seriously, this had to have been the largest university town lacking a sprawling, painfully hip, coffee joint open past midnight. Simply put: a place to loiter. Though the Kitchen does food (good, seasonal, and local with a big side of pretense) and has a bar, it fills this niche nicely. Free wifi, long hours, good tea, multiple seating areas (tables, bar, living room), and killer location have made it a part of my Oxford life rather quickly. Doesn’t hurt that they do White Horse Ales.

Dancing in the Dark (by zach.stone)
Outside The Bear, Oxford. Those were the days, when we were all still young and in Oxford. When really there was nothing more to do after a day in the Bod then hang out at The Bear, or on the street in front of it.
(PS I know I need to photoshop the bit of arm out of the lower right corner to make the balance perfect, I am just lazy and can’t be asked)

Timeout (by zach.stone)
On of my favorites ever. Timeout on a friday night @ The Bear, Oxford. Those times are done now. Forever. And all our bank accounts/livers are  better for it.

Almost Home (by zach.stone)
This photo is from just over 14 hours after the one entitled ‘Setting out.’  We are almost back to our campsite at Wasdale Head, and fully whipped from the day of climbing. Peter and I tackled three routes on Scafell: Bottrill’s Slab (VS 4c), Mickledore Grooves (VS 4c), and Moss Ghyll Grooves (MVS 4c). Ian and Matt bagged Bottrill’s and Moss Ghyll as well, but Ian may have accidentally climbed the ole’ E1 5b variation to Moss Ghyll. They also had an epic descent. That took 3 hours. This is what happens to Sport Climbers/Boulderers on Scafell. In fairness, though, they were up for it and got on with it. Especially Ian just months off shattering his ankle in a fall from Master’s Edge. This was his first day back. And what a day it was. By this point we were on autopilot, aimed at camp, with food on our minds. I guess what I like about this photo is how it hints at all the things which make a day of climbing good. First, the mountains, second the weather, and finally- and most importantly- the same four people who set out are walking home under their own power. As I was taught early on there is only one type of ‘good’ day in the mountains. A good day is a day in which you yourself, and your partners, walk home at the end.
