Not 1, not 2, but at least 3 places with otherworldly mac and cheese. In no order:
Virginian, C & O, and The Local. All three different. All three mind-blowing. And as a long time connoisseur of mac and cheese, this makes my heart glad.

For the Lexingtonians: tres bien. Brothers/Sister date there tonight and all very impressed. The Creme Brule was especially impressive. All palates were pleased, Hannah’s refined Parisian one, my Oxbridge snobbery, and Lyman’s Kentucky integrity. More anon. But you should go. And Harold is a very good waiter.
*very tired, need to go to bed, re: memorial day post below- I deserve it- hence my lack of bother over accent marks.
I like making granola. It takes 5 min to mix/put in oven/clean up. Click through the pix for my semi-instructions.
Ingredients: One can of quick cook oats, one cup of honey, 3/4 cup of molasses, 1/2 cup veggie oil, teaspoon of vanilla, teaspoon of almond extract, raisins
Note, all of these are vague-ish. Google granola recipes or get creative with nuts, dried fruit, etc.
After baking, turn off oven and leave in for c. 1-2 hours or until dry. Add/subtract ingredients to taste. Mixing your dry ingredients first, though, will always ensure a more consistent flavor. I make 20-40 gallons a week kids. I know these things. And always mix by hand, a mixer will break up the oats. Again, I do this every day. I mixed a 12 gallon batch by hand today…
Last night I went to the Magdalen Arms for the first time, and it was very good. While I doubt I will find myself in the happy position of having a full dinner there frequently, it is well worth the time and money. We had antipasta misto to start and wood pigeon and cod as our mains. I am not a true foodie so I can’t really offer nuanced comment and critique other than that it was very good. Much better than Gee’s. Moreover the atmosphere is a pleasant change from the normal Oxford scene. Never once did I feel hurried to get through a course or clear the table so the staff could seat other guests. And, to top it off, the manager (I think) made me a killer old fashioned even though they arn’t on the menue.
I would just like to note that last night I enjoyed one of the finest meals in recent memory with two old friends at The Guinea in Mayfair. My my my, they know how to cook the meat. An Eric Hassler (if you know him, you know what I mean) level perfect steak, great atmosphere, great service, and a good wine pairing. Really no complaints at all. And, above all, the conversation was good, true, and useful.
In a break from climbing pix, I have decided to break down and share some Oxford places I love. Will not share my real secrets, just places I find nice. Recently the Turl Street Kitchen has caught my fancy. Long I lamented Oxford’s lack of a non-pub/non-club/non-restaurant open past, say, 7pm. I mean seriously, this had to have been the largest university town lacking a sprawling, painfully hip, coffee joint open past midnight. Simply put: a place to loiter. Though the Kitchen does food (good, seasonal, and local with a big side of pretense) and has a bar, it fills this niche nicely. Free wifi, long hours, good tea, multiple seating areas (tables, bar, living room), and killer location have made it a part of my Oxford life rather quickly. Doesn’t hurt that they do White Horse Ales.
(via Red River Rockhouse)
For any who frequent the Gorge (only tools call it ‘The Red, fyi, re: The Manimal) there is a new food option, the Red River Rock house. Just down 11 from Miggies/Natural bridge/Torrent, and crucially in Woolf Co., this new place just opened up. I kid you not, I had one of the three best burgers I have ever had when I visited last night. Really fun laid back vibe, really great food, PBR and Flying Dog on tap, great prices, and really good people. Buckle up and kick the recession in the teeth people, support local business. Combined with the fact that the reconstruction of Red River Outdoors began this weekend, this new place might just signal that the Gorge is ready to grow up. Don’t get me wrong, I love Miggies, and Miguel, but its nice to have another option and to spread the crowd. Oh yah, Woolf county aint dry either…
A Dinner Panorama (by Zach Stone) Wadham guest night last friday.
Un buen día en Montserrat! La temperatura fue perfecto y la roca fue cool! El estilo allí es más dura, pero me gusta mucho!
SOLO MISSION: BEAR AND BACK
Note to self: 100+ mile rides are highly more enjoyable in good company. Longest solo ride to date. Won’t do that...
Instagram Roundup, It’s been a lot of cycling.
BUMMER.
If a person is stuck in the stacks fantasizing about librarians, I’m assuming it’s because they can’t find their book and need help real...
