The Wayfarer's Dole: A Day in Winchester
Free beer alert- The Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester has been dispensing The Wayfarer’s Dole gratis since 1136. I love my work, it takes me to such interesting places, on Wednesday I spent the day in Winchester. Ostensibly I was there to analyze a manuscript at Winchester College- which I did do- but I made sure I got up early enough to have time to nose around before my appointment at...

Why Women Still Can't Have It All →
By Anne-Marie Slaughter
Read this on the plane today. One of the best articles I have read in a long time- for men and women. And, ladies, a great ad for marrying an academic if you have major career ambitions. I have acquired a mysterious new shotgun. All matching serial numbers. No makers mark or stamps. Not even gauge on the barrel. Original (I think) nickle plating on the reciever. It’s a S/S 16 Gauge with English action. Will post pix soon. Traded a .32 Manhurin-Wather PP for the Shotgun + $50.

Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of...
So. I recently put down a deposit on my apartment. Now I have to fit it out. As I have mulled over the furnishing of my apartment I have encountered a difficult fact: I need everything to mean something. Or rather to broadcast something. I need my table, my dustbin, my bed frame to disclose a Zach-ness. More precisely I want to see people seeing me via my self presentation. How’s that for an...

– from Kurt Anderson’s ‘Prisoners of Style’ for Vanity Fair. Read the whole thing here. This is perhaps the best piece of cultural criticism I have read in a while.
